Also the transformations to a race car, a robot, a spaceship - they're all influenced by popular television at the time - Star Wars, Hot Wheels, Transformers. And to Michael Jackson, a drug dealer who sells drugs to kids may as well be a Bond villain trying to take over the world. It's pure magical entertainment, and it also gives some great insight into Jackson's attitudes towards women, children, and drugs. It's not high art, and it's not trying to be. Then we get to the main feast of Smooth Criminal.

Thankfully at the end he is able to break free though. The media 'hounds' him and exploits his eccentricities for profit. In it we see the clear visual metaphor for Jackson's relationship with the media - he's larger than life in his personality and so the media tries to tie him down and make a freak show out of him. Made my Jim Blashfield, who also did the music videos for Paul Simon's The Boy In The Bubble and Talking Head's And She Was, Leave Me Alone is so much richer visually than Blashfield's previous music videos. Leave Me Alone is also a visual spectacle. Speed Demon is also great, teaming up with Will Vinton (who did the claymation characters in Captain EO and a the California Raisins, amongst many other popular animated characters in the 80s), Jackson is able to visualise his thoughts on the media and hysteric fans - he is chased by them but also gets a thrill from teasing them and evading them, which speaks about the life of being an entertainer you don't want the crazy fans and the media attention but you also need it to a certain extent. Badder is a way of Michael appeasing to these fans that want to be like him and telling them how he approves of kids emulating him and his dance. Think about Michael's inspirations James Brown, Fred Astaire, Bob Fosse. People are often baffled by the inclusion of a kid version of Bad but it has a simple answer: Michael Jackson thinks it's fun when young fans emulate him - he's even on record as saying that. Badder and Speed Demon also don't get the recognition it deserves. It's an amazing piece of entertainment and ticks so many boxes for what makes a film visually engaging - the montage sequence especially is great to break down on a visual level: notice how motion is just injected at every conceivable point. It's a film a lot of people misunderstand and I think it deserves some serious reassessment as a piece of visual media.
